A quick way to check a horse’s hydration status is to perform a skin pinch test. By simply pinching a fold of skin on the horse’s neck and counting the seconds it takes to return to normal, you can determine if your horse is adequately hydrated, slightly dehydrated, or severely dehydrated. Christine Johnson, DVM, of Leclair Equine, in Berthoud, Colorado, demonstrates how to do this.
