How To Clean a Saddle

Review these saddle-cleaning steps—which are the same for both English and Western saddles—to prevent your leather from breaking down.

Regular tack cleaning helps prevent leather from breaking down. The steps are essentially the same whether your saddle of choice is English or Western:

  • After each ride, wipe your saddle with a damp sponge or cloth to remove dust and hair.
  • If certain areas are dirty or wet with sweat, add a touch of saddle soap to the sponge or rag as you work.
  • Once or twice a month, condition it thoroughly, removing all dirt from the underside of straps and reaching into the corners of the saddle.
