A well-stocked first-aid kit ensures you’ll have everything you need pre- and post-vet visit the next time your horse has a minor injury or illness. This includes:
- A topical wound repair product to prevent and manage infection of minor wounds and abrasions and promote healing.
- Eye irrigation solution to help cleanse the eye, which can relieve discomfort, itching, stinging, and burning.
- Nonstretching brown gauze to hold bandaging materials in place.
- Self-adhering wrap, which sticks to itself but not other surfaces, making it ideal for holding bandages in place.
- Telfa pads for wound dressing.
- Sterile cotton combine rolls, which offer a protective layer to bandages and are highly absorbent.
- Gauze pads for dressing wounds.
- Poultice for drawing out inflammation and infection if your horse has a hoof abscess.
- Duct tape
- Elastikon adhesive tape.
- Scissors
- Antimicrobial bandages.
- Porous tape.
- A penlight.
- A rectal thermometer.
Store all these items in a plastic tote, bin, or other container with a lid where they will stay clean, dry, and organized.
