When a horse’s shoe shifts or becomes loose, you either need to secure or remove it until your farrier can arrive. Sina Parsaye, DVM, of Parsaye Veterinary Services Inc., in Laporte, Colorado, demonstrates how to use a clincher or hammer to tighten a shoe and a puller to remove it. Done correctly, you should be able to preserve the hoof wall. Then, have your farrier out to reset the shoe as soon as possible.
