How to Do a Horse Barn Safety Check

A quick weekly barn safety check doesn’t take long, but it can prevent accidents before they happen.

Regular assessments of your horse’s barn and stall can help prevent injuries, reduce fire risks, and keep your horses safe and healthy. Start with the barn aisle. Keep it clear of clutter, cords, and tools. Make sure the floor is dry and not slippery. Check for tripping hazards like uneven mats or loose boards.

Next, inspect each stall. Look for sharp edges, broken wood, or exposed nails. Ensure doors open and close smoothly, and all latches are secure—but easy to operate in an emergency.

Check feed and water buckets daily for cracks or sharp edges. Clean and refill regularly. Also, make sure to hang hay nets at a safe height to avoid entanglement.

Inspect all electrical components. Make sure outlets are covered, cords are out of reach, and no wires are exposed. Dust off light fixtures and check that emergency lighting is working.

Ensure your fire extinguisher is easily accessible and up to date. First aid kits—for both horses and humans—should be stocked and in a visible, central location. A quick barn safety check doesn’t take long, but it can prevent accidents before they happen. Aim to do it once a week.
