If you’re thinking about changing your horse’s type or brand of feed, a smooth and gradual transition is key to avoiding digestive upset.

Start by introducing the new feed slowly, over 7 to 10 days.

Day 1–3 = 75% old feed / 25% new feed.
Day 4–6 = 50% old / 50% new.
Day 7–10 = 25% old / 75% new.
Day 10+ = 100% new feed.

Make changes by weight, not volume, to help keep your horse’s total intake consistent.

Monitor your horse’s behavior, energy level, and appetite throughout the transition to ensure he’s adjusting well to the new feed. Also make sure he has plenty of clean, fresh water and quality hay. If you notice any issues, introduce the new feed in smaller increments or over longer periods or call your vet. Once your horse has fully transitioned to the new feed, you can adjust the ration based on his body condition, activity level, and nutritional needs. Always read the instructions on the feed bag’s label to make sure you’re providing the appropriate amount.
