Supplements can serve many purposes, from providing balanced vitamins and minerals to supporting joint or gut health. But if you don’t feed them properly, your horse won’t get much benefit, and you’ll be wasting money.
First, use a kitchen scale to measure your horse’s grain ration by weight, not by scoop, since different feeds can weigh different amounts. Then, add the supplement according to the recommended amount on the label. Read the instructions carefully, as some supplements require an initial higher “loading dose” to be effective before dropping down to a lower maintenance dose.
Use the scoop that comes with the supplement—they’re sized to that specific product. Level it off, then add it right on top of the grain.
If your horse is a picky eater or sorts out supplements and leaves them behind, add a splash of water, a tablespoon of oil, or unsweetened applesauce. This binds everything together so they can’t pick around it. Then, give it a good mix so the supplements are evenly distributed throughout the feed, and not just sitting on top.
