Checking your horse’s mouth to assess the mucous membranes, look for foreign objects, or evaluate the teeth can help you pinpoint problems. Signs of injury or illness include a dark, purple gum color, a capillary refill time longer than 2 seconds, or lesions in the tongue or gums, for example.
