Over time, horse owners and equestrians tend to accumulate a lot of gear, from boots and riding clothes to tack and accessories. The question is, where do you keep it all? You probably don’t want dusty boots and sweat-soaked helmets mingling with the clothes in your closet. And you also want to store your belongings in a way that’s organized, accessible, and protected from the elements. So here are some smart storage strategies for your horse gear.

At-Home Storage Solutions

If you don’t have access to a barn or tack room, your home setup can work just fine with a little planning.

A dedicated closet, mudroom corner, or even a section of your garage can serve as your gear hub. The key is to separate clean items from dirty ones. Use hooks or wall-mounted racks for helmets, bridles, or jackets, and store boots upright to help them hold their shape. Boot trees or rolled towels inside tall boots can prevent creasing.

For smaller items such as gloves, spurs, and socks, bins or drawer organizers go a long way. Labeling containers helps you avoid last-minute scrambles before a ride.

Because riding gear often comes home dusty or damp, consider adding a ventilated hamper or breathable storage bin for items that need to air out before washing. Avoid sealing dirty gear in airtight containers. This traps moisture and leads to odors or mildew.

Garage Spaces and Entry Areas

For riders who want to keep the mess out of the house, a garage or entryway setup is ideal. Install sturdy shelving for storage bins and use heavy-duty hooks for hanging items like halters, reins, or grooming bags.

A simple bench with storage underneath can double as a place to sit while pulling off muddy boots. Rubber mats or trays beneath boot storage areas help contain dirt and moisture.

If you have a saddle or more extensive tack, you can store it on a wall-mounted saddle rack in the garage, but be mindful of temperature and humidity. Extreme heat, cold, or damp conditions can damage leather over time, so consider a saddle cover, climate control, or at least a dry, insulated space.

Tack Rooms and Lockers

Whether you board your horse or keep them at home, a tack room or personal locker offers the most convenience. These spaces are designed specifically for equestrian gear, but organization still matters.

Use saddle racks, bridle hooks, and blanket bars to keep items off the ground and well-kept. Shelving units or trunks can store grooming kits, first-aid supplies, and extra equipment.

Ventilation is critical in a tack room. Leather tack like saddles and bridles needs airflow to prevent mold. In humid climates, a small dehumidifier or moisture-absorbing products can help protect your investment.

Lockers are great for shared barns, but they can get cramped quickly. Keep only what you use regularly and rotate seasonal gear (such as heavy blankets or fly sheets) to avoid clutter.

Gear-Specific Storage

Some items benefit from specialized storage solutions designed with riders in mind:

  • Helmet bags: Protect your helmet from dust, damage, and the elements while allowing airflow. These bags also provide an easy, organized way to transport the helmet, often with handles and compartments for accessories.
  • Boot bags: Tall boot bags keep leather boots clean and upright, especially during transport. Look for breathable materials to prevent trapped moisture.
  • Bridle bags: Whether hanging on the wall or placed in a trunk, these bags protect leather bridles from dirt and damage during storage and transport. They also help prevent reins and straps from getting tangled.
  • Saddle pad racks: Hanging or tiered racks help pads dry thoroughly between rides, reducing odors and bacteria.
  • Grooming totes: Keep brushes, hoof picks, and sprays organized and portable.
  • Trailer door caddies: While designed to hang in a horse trailer, a caddy can serve as a convenient way to store and keep items organized anywhere. Most have pockets and compartments designed specifically for grooming tools, boots and wraps, and accessories.

No matter the item, the goal is the same: to keep it clean, dry, and in good shape.

Dealing With Dirt, Dust, and Smells

Naturally, riding gear can get dirty fast. But proper storage can keep the mess manageable.

Always let damp gear dry completely before putting it away. Jackets, blankets, saddle pads, and gloves should be aired out to prevent mildew growth. For boots, wipe off excess dirt and use a damp cloth for quick cleaning before storage.

Odor control can be as simple as adding baking soda, cedar chips, or odor-absorbing inserts to storage areas. Cleaning routines, such as wiping down tack and washing pads regularly, also make a big difference.

Keep It Practical

You don’t need a picture-perfect tack room to stay organized. The best system is one that fits your space, your budget, and your routine. Start small, try things out, and adjust as your collection of gear grows.
